What is a GEDCOM file:
A GEDCOM or better known as GEnealogical Data COMmunications is a method of which databases of information can be exchanged between different genealogical software programs. If you have genealogy software, check your documentation on how to import/export GEDCOM files. What the software does is amazing. When exporting it takes your entire database including files, pictures, sources and notes. It compresses them into one file with an extension of .ged. When the file is imported it then takes all the information and uncompress the file and puts it in the proper format for your software. At that point you can modify the file.
I use GEDCOM for more than just submitting a file. I use it to backup my files just in case I have a software or computer problem. I upload the GEDCOM file to a free site which can be found on the internet. The computer may crash or the software may need re-installed but the information is safe. Just a little friendly advice.
Due to issues of privacy all living individuals and their information have been removed from the gedcom file.
Here is the latest GEDCOM file as of May 20, 2007. Enjoy!
